This was not just an exhibition, but rather an interactive space. Visitors had the opportunity to participate in the work in the kitchen, prepare their own recipes for the audience on site or the next visitor, or simply taste the food from different culture, fuelled by tolerance and curiosity.
During the construction of the kitchen, they described the process as a kind of three-dimensional painting. Using wooden panels of different sizes, textures and colours, they created a bespoke kitchen island that spread out in all directions, forming small “islands”.
It all started with the idea of a dining table about three metres long in the middle, like the first stroke on a canvas. During construction, they discussed a solution to group the work surface, ingredients and crockery together. This concept was used to build on site, observing which ‘brushstrokes’ (spaces) were still needed and where the picture was too crowded. Shapes and positions were cut and arranged on site according to the logic of the painting. In the end, main islands, documentation islands, exhibition walls, video islands and other areas were created.
A tapered, spherical structure protruded above the exhibition wall, inspired by the ‘onion cellar’ idea from Günter Grass’ ‘The Tin Drum’ and representing a release of shared emotions. The book says: ‘When the heart is full, the eyes overflow.’ Due to the global pandemic, everyone is dealing with varying degrees of lockdowns and bad memories to some extent.
Similar to the special moments in The Tin Drum, They hope that in this time of need for healing, people from different cultures can unite and look to the future by preparing food, tasting it, and touching that moment in the present of taste.
