The inspiration came from a rumor among students of Kunst Akademie Düsseldorf: when one strolls in the empty campus at a certain specific moment, the spirit of Beuys, holding a dead rabbit in his arms, may conjure in the long, quiet corridor, mumbling . He might ignore you, or he may approach and whisper in your ears. I wondered, if I invited his spirit through rituals and greeted him, what conversation would we have?
Not long after I confirmed this theme, I dreamed of a spacious hall, with curtains but without windows. In the middle there was a pond. I saw myself performing certain religious rituals by the pond. Suddenly, the heavy, velvet curtains stirred, as if they were breezed. I saw an indistinct shadow behind them and stepped up for check. The shadow ‘stared’ at me for a while, soon it vanished along the wind.
I used my face as the canvas and put up facial patterns, including a red mark at the center of my forehead for exorcism. I plead for energy from the earth and the sky, begging for answers from the stray spirits. I detailed to them my unfulfilled wishes, and sent them off to peace.
